colar

to strain, to filter

verb koh-LAHR Rare

Also means

to sneak through

Usage Note

Colar is stem-changing (o > ue): cuelo, cuelas, cuela. In the kitchen it means to strain liquid through a colander (cuela el caldo). Reflexively, colarse means to sneak into a place without permission or to cut in a queue — a very common informal use in Spain.

Examples

"Hay que colar el caldo antes de servir."

Natural Translation

You need to strain the broth before serving.
