Cepa has two main senses: in biology/medicine it is a strain of a virus or bacterium (una cepa del virus), and in viticulture it is a vine stock or grape variety (cepa de uva). The idiom de pura cepa ('of pure stock') means something is genuinely authentic or thoroughbred.
