cargo

position, post

noun KAHR-goh Common

charge, cost (financial)

Usage Note

Cargo in the sense of a job or official position is very common: estar a cargo de means 'to be in charge of', and hacerse cargo means 'to take charge of'. In a financial context it means a charge or debit: un cargo en cuenta (a charge to an account). Do not confuse with the English 'cargo' (freight) — that is carga in Spanish.
