Usage Note

Bolso is the standard word for a handbag in Spain; in much of Latin America cartera or bolsa is preferred instead. Bolsillo (pocket) is a diminutive of bolso but is not interchangeable with it. A bolso de mano is a clutch bag, while a mochila is a backpack.
