abrigo

overcoat

noun ah-BREE-goh Rare

Also means

shelter

Usage Note

Abrigo is primarily a winter overcoat (ponerse el abrigo = to put on one's coat), but it also means shelter or protection from the elements: al abrigo del viento = sheltered from the wind. The verb abrigar means both to wrap someone up warmly and, figuratively, to harbor feelings (abrigar esperanzas = to nurture hopes). Do not confuse abrigo with chaqueta (jacket) — an abrigo is always the outer, heavier coat.

Examples

"No salgas sin el abrigo, hace mucho frío."

Natural Translation

Don't go out without your overcoat, it's very cold.
