Barrio refers to a neighbourhood or district within a city, and carries strong community connotations — el barrio is 'the hood' in informal speech. Barrio chino (literally 'Chinese quarter') historically referred to red-light districts in Spain, unrelated to Chinese communities. In Latin America, barrio can also imply a lower-income area.
