Asomar can be transitive (asomó la cabeza por la ventana, 'he stuck his head out the window') or reflexive (asomarse, 'to lean out' or 'to show up'). Asomarse al balcón is the standard phrase for leaning out over a balcony. In figurative use, an emotion or idea can asomar on someone's face.
