Usage Note
Alegrar is most naturally used in the reflexive form alegrarse (de/por), meaning 'to be glad (about)': me alegro de verte = 'I'm glad to see you.' The transitive use (la noticia me alegró = the news cheered me up) is also common. The related adjective is alegre (cheerful) and the noun alegría (joy).
