Vivo with estar means 'alive' (está vivo, he is alive); with ser it means 'vivid, bright, or sharp-witted' (es muy vivo, he is very sharp). En vivo means 'live' (a live performance), while en directo is the preferred phrase in Spain. The colloquial vivo also means cunning or streetwise.
