Usage Note
Variar has a written accent in its stem-stressed forms to break the diphthong: varía, varías, varía, varían (note the accent), but variamos, variáis (no accent, diphthong allowed). Forgetting this accent is a very common learner error. It is often used impersonally (los precios varían = prices vary) and in the phrase para variar ('for a change', often ironic).
