Abierto is the irregular past participle of abrir ('to open') used as an adjective. It uses estar when describing a temporary or changeable state (la tienda está abierta = 'the shop is open') and ser in more abstract senses (es una persona muy abierta = 'she is a very open person'). As a tennis/golf term, el Abierto (also Open) refers to an open championship.
