Troncal derives from tronco (trunk) and means 'relating to the main trunk or core'. In education, asignaturas troncales are core/compulsory subjects. In telecommunications and transport, it describes a main artery or backbone line. It is invariable by gender: una línea troncal, el eje troncal.
