Usage Note

Tragar means to swallow food or liquid and colloquially to tolerate something unpleasant (no lo trago, I can't stand him). The phrase tragar saliva (to swallow hard) expresses anxiety or reluctance. Tragarse (reflexive) intensifies the sense of enduring something: se tragó el orgullo (he swallowed his pride).
