Usage Note

Total is invariable in gender (el coste total, la suma total). As a noun (el total) it means 'the total' or 'the sum.' In colloquial speech total is used as a filler meaning 'anyway' or 'in the end': total, que no vine ('anyway, I didn't come'). The adverb totalmente ('totally, completely') is common in emphasis.
