tostada

toast

noun tohs-TAH-dah Rare

Usage Note

Tostada is a slice of bread that has been toasted, or in Mexican and Central American cuisine, a flat fried tortilla used as a base for toppings. In Spain una tostada is typically a toasted bread slice served at breakfast with olive oil or tomato. Note that the verb tostar also means 'to tan' (skin), so estar tostado can colloquially mean 'to be tanned'.

Examples

"Desayuné una tostada con aceite."

Natural Translation

I had toast with olive oil for breakfast.
