Usage Note

Tira covers a narrow band of material (a strip of fabric or tape) and, crucially in Spanish-language media, a tira cómica is a comic strip. It can also refer to a police slang term for a cop in some Latin American varieties. The verb tirar (to throw/pull) shares the same root but is unrelated in meaning.
