tilde

accent mark

noun TEEL-deh Rare

Origin: From Latin titulus (title, inscription mark).

Also means

tilde

Usage Note

Tilde in Spanish most commonly refers to any written accent mark, including the acute accent (á, é, etc.) — not just the squiggle over ñ. The Real Academia uses tilde for all diacritical marks on Spanish letters. Do not confuse with English 'tilde', which refers specifically to the ~ symbol; in Spanish that symbol is called virgulilla or informally also tilde.

Examples

"Olvidaste la tilde en está."

Natural Translation

You forgot the accent mark on está.
