Usage Note
Tío means uncle in standard usage, but in colloquial Spain it is ubiquitous as a casual term for 'guy' or 'dude' (ese tío es muy listo — that guy is very clever). The feminine form is tía. In Latin America this slang use is far less common than in Spain.
