Usage Note
Suspender is a false friend: it does NOT mean 'to spend.' In Spain it is the standard word for failing a subject or exam — suspendí el examen means 'I failed the exam' — whereas Latin American Spanish typically uses reprobar or jalar instead. It also means to halt or cancel something, as in suspender una reunión ('to call off a meeting').
