Usage Note

Sumario has two main senses: a summary or abstract of a document, and — in the Spanish legal system — the preliminary judicial investigation phase before a full trial (abrir un sumario means to open an investigation). The adjective sumario also exists, meaning summary or brief (as in juicio sumario, a summary trial). Do not confuse with resumen, which is strictly a content summary without the legal connotation.
