sospecha

suspicion, hunch

noun sohs-PEH-chah Less Common

Usage Note

Sospecha nearly always carries a negative connotation — one suspects wrongdoing, not good luck. The related verb is sospechar ('to suspect') and the adjective sospechoso means 'suspicious' or 'suspect' as a noun. The phrase bajo sospecha means 'under suspicion'. Unlike English 'suspicion', sospecha does not have a neutral curiosity sense.

Examples

"La policía tenía sospechas sobre el vecino."

Natural Translation

The police had suspicions about the neighbour.
