Senderismo is the standard Spanish term for recreational trail-walking or hiking, derived from sendero (path/trail). It is distinct from mountaineering (montañismo or alpinismo), which implies technical climbing. A practitioner is a senderista. The activity is enormously popular in Spain, with waymarked routes called GR (Gran Recorrido) trails.
