Ruido is the general word for noise or sound, especially unwanted sound: hacer ruido (to make noise), ruido de fondo (background noise). Unlike English 'sound,' ruido often implies annoyance or disturbance; a neutral 'sound' is more precisely sonido. The adjective ruidoso means noisy.
