Usage Note

Recio has two main registers: describing a physically strong, robust person or object (un hombre recio, a sturdy man), and describing harsh conditions (viento recio, a strong wind; lluvia recia, heavy rain). It is formal and literary; colloquial alternatives are fuerte or duro. The adverb form reciamente means 'strongly' or 'vigorously'. In some Latin American dialects it is used for a loud, booming voice.
