Pulsera comes from pulso ('pulse/wrist'), reflecting the item's placement on the wrist. A reloj de pulsera is a 'wristwatch', distinguishing it from a pocket watch (reloj de bolsillo). The medical wristband worn by patients in hospitals is also called a pulsera in Spain and Latin America.
