Preso can be both a noun (el preso — the prisoner) and an adjective (estar preso — to be imprisoned). The feminine is presa. It is slightly more colloquial than prisionero/prisionera; both are used interchangeably. Preso político (political prisoner) is a frequent compound in news language.
