Origin: From Latin praefectura, from praefectus (one placed in charge).

Usage Note

Prefectura names both the office of a prefect and the territory or building it administers. In Latin America it is also used for local police headquarters or a regional government office. The corresponding title is prefecto (m) / prefecta (f).
