Posesión can be abstract (la posesión del poder — 'possession of power') or concrete (referring to an owned object — mis posesiones = 'my possessions/belongings'). The phrase tomar posesión means 'to take office' or 'to take possession of'. The related adjective is posesivo/a, which also names the grammatical category of possessive pronouns.
