porque

because

conjunction POR-keh Common

Usage Note

Porque (one word, no accent) is the causal conjunction 'because', introducing a factual reason. It must be distinguished from por qué (two words, accented) 'why?' (interrogative), porqué (one word, accented) 'the reason' (noun), and por que (two words, no accent, rare) used after verbs that take por. Getting these four apart is a classic Spanish spelling challenge.

Examples

"No fui porque estaba cansado."

Natural Translation

I didn't go because I was tired.

Literal Translation

Not I-went because I-was tired
