Usage Note

Pluma originally meant a bird's feather and then was extended to 'quill pen' and later any writing pen (pluma estilográfica = fountain pen). In Mexico and several other Latin American countries pluma is the everyday word for a ballpoint pen, whereas Spain generally uses bolígrafo. The noun plumaje refers to a bird's whole plumage.
