Usage Note

Plaza is the central public square found in virtually every Spanish town — la plaza mayor is the grand main square. It also means an available seat or job vacancy: hay una plaza libre ('there is a free seat/vacancy'). Do not confuse with playa ('beach') — the difference is a single vowel.
