plato

plate

noun PLAH-toh Less Common

Origin: From Latin 'platus' (flat), via Greek 'platys'.

Also means

dish (food)

Usage Note

Plato means both the physical plate and the dish or course served on it: el primer plato (the first course), lavar los platos (to wash up). In a restaurant menu, plato del día is the 'dish of the day'. Do not confuse with Platón (Plato the philosopher), which carries an accent.
