Usage Note
Peso covers both physical weight and the burden of responsibility — levantar peso means to lift weights, but el peso de la culpa is the weight of guilt. It is also the name of several Latin American currencies (Mexican, Argentine, Chilean, etc.). The phrase quitarse un peso de encima ('to get a weight off one's shoulders') is widely used.
