Usage Note

Perfilar derives from perfil ('profile') and means to give shape or definition to something. Used transitively it means to refine or sharpen a plan or idea ('perfilar los detalles'); in the reflexive form perfilarse it means something is emerging or taking shape ('se perfila como favorito' = he is shaping up as the favourite). This reflexive use is especially common in journalism.
