Pelotero primarily means 'baseball player' in the Caribbean Spanish-speaking world — Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico — where baseball is the dominant sport. In Spain and much of South America, pelotero can mean a ball boy at a sporting event, or colloquially a flatterer or sycophant. Learners should be aware of this strong regional split.
