Patriota is a common-gender noun: el patriota (male) and la patriota (female) share the same form, following the pattern of nouns ending in -a that are not inherently feminine. The related abstract noun is patriotismo, and the adjective is patriótico. The word is often used both admiringly and ironically depending on context.
