pato

duck

noun PAH-toh Rare

Usage Note

Pato (masculine, duck) has a feminine counterpart pata, but pata is more commonly used for 'leg/paw of an animal' — so context is important. The standard female duck is la hembra del pato or, in some regions, ánade hembra. In several Latin American countries pato is also a slang term that can be pejorative, so learners should be aware of register.

Examples

"El pato nadaba en el estanque del parque."

Natural Translation

The duck was swimming in the park pond.
