ala

wing

noun AH-lah Less Common

Also means

flank

Usage Note

Ala is feminine but takes the masculine article el in the singular (el ala) to avoid the clash of two 'a' sounds — just like el agua or el hacha. In the plural it reverts to feminine: las alas. It extends to the wing of a building, a political wing (ala derecha/izquierda), and a soccer/field position (winger).

Examples

"El pájaro extendió las alas."

Natural Translation

The bird spread its wings.
