Usage Note
Oeste is one of the four cardinal directions. It is used with al to indicate direction or position: al oeste de Madrid (to the west of Madrid). Unlike in English, cardinal directions are not capitalised in Spanish unless they form part of a proper name. The related adjective is occidental.
