Ocurrencia most commonly means a clever or funny remark, as in ¡Qué ocurrencia! (What a funny idea!). It can also mean a sudden whim or impulse, and less often simply 'occurrence' (an event), though acontecimiento is preferred for that sense. Context distinguishes the meanings.
