Alerta is feminine as a noun (una alerta roja = a red alert) but the adjective alerta is invariable (estar alerta = to be on alert, same for masculine and feminine). The phrase en estado de alerta (on alert status) is common in news language. Do not add -a endings when using it as an adjective.
