ocupante

occupant

noun oh-koo-PAHN-teh Rare

Origin: From Latin occupans/occupantis (taking possession).

passenger

Usage Note

Ocupante is common-gender (mf) — el ocupante / la ocupante. It covers both the legal sense (a person who occupies a property, lawfully or not) and the neutral sense of a vehicle passenger (los ocupantes del coche, 'the car's occupants'). In squatter contexts, the press prefers okupa (a colloquial, stigmatised spelling).

Examples

"Los ocupantes del edificio fueron evacuados."

Natural Translation

The occupants of the building were evacuated.
