octavo

eighth

adjective ok-TAH-boh Less Common

Usage Note

Octavo is the ordinal for eight and also a common book-format term: en octavo (octavo, a paper size). Like most Spanish ordinals it agrees in gender and number: octava planta (eighth floor, f.). Beyond tenth (décimo), Spanish speakers often substitute cardinal numbers (el piso doce rather than duodécimo), so ordinals above ten are rare in everyday speech.

Examples

"Vivo en el octavo piso."

Natural Translation

I live on the eighth floor.
