nombramiento

appointment; nomination

noun nohm-brah-MYEN-toh Rare

Usage Note

Nombramiento refers to the official act of appointing someone to a post or position: el nombramiento de un ministro (the appointment of a minister). It is more formal and institutional than nominar (to nominate in the sense of award nominations, a more recent borrowing from English in entertainment contexts). The verb is nombrar (to name/appoint). Distinguish from nombre (name) — nombramiento is strictly about bestowing a role.

Examples

"El nombramiento del nuevo director fue sorpresivo."

Natural Translation

The appointment of the new director was surprising.
