Nacimiento is used both literally (a child's birth) and figuratively (el nacimiento de una idea, 'the birth of an idea'). In Spain and Latin America it also refers to a Nativity scene (el nacimiento de Belén) set up at Christmas. The compound fecha de nacimiento ('date of birth') is essential for official documents.
