Muestra can be a physical sample (muestra de sangre = blood sample), a free product sample (muestra gratuita), a demonstration or sign of something (una muestra de afecto = a token of affection), or an exhibition (una muestra de arte). The verb mostrar shares the same root. Do not confuse with demostración, which implies more active proof or performance.
