Modernismo in the Spanish-speaking world refers primarily to the late-19th-century Hispanic literary movement led by Rubén Darío, emphasising beauty and innovation — distinct from European architectural Modernism. In a Spanish context it can also refer to Catalan Modernisme (Art Nouveau-style architecture). Context determines which sense is meant.
