Mesofase denotes an intermediate phase of matter between a true crystal and an isotropic liquid — the state characteristic of liquid crystals. The two main mesophase types are nemática and esméctica (nematic and smectic). Liquid-crystal displays (LCD) exploit mesophase behaviour.
