Usage Note

Mentir is an e→ie stem-changing verb: miento, mientes, miente… The related noun is mentira ('a lie') and the agent noun is mentiroso/a ('liar'). Do not confuse with yacer or echarse ('to lie down') — mentir refers exclusively to lying as in telling falsehoods.
