Origin: From Latin 'malum cotoneum' (quince apple), later applied to the peach in Iberian Spanish.

Usage Note

Melocotón is the standard word for 'peach' in Spain, but in most of Latin America the fruit is called durazno. The two words are interchangeable in meaning but regional: a speaker from Mexico or Argentina will typically not use melocotón. The plural is regular: melocotones.
